A Spooktacular Event at Ocala

. Posted in Racing News

Ocala Speedway had the Late Models up this week along with the Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks, Mini Stocks, and Gladiators. Before the features started, however, the kids got to trick-or-treat on the frontstretch and they also had a costume contest. Even though Willy Wonka wasn't there, Joe Dirt searched and found his candy with Scott Mooers. The prizes for the night were donated by Xtreme Team Racing.

The first feature on the night was the Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks. The race got off to a spooky start when Jason Gamble had a tire go down and Jerrid Bennett lost his wheel and axle in turn 4. After another 2 laps, Scott Mooers had a tire go down and behind him, Sean Babcock, Jonathan Appleby, Gordon Cade (driving the 55W), Cory Howard, and Brian Shea all got collected in a spin with Appleby getting the worst of it. Harold Erickson and Scott Mooers were racing hard down the back straight when Erickson had a problem and shot straight into the back stretch wall, getting the front end airborne. Erickson immediately got out of the car as the crowd gave him a roar. On lap 13, the lead pack of Mike Stalnaker, Vaughn Woodall, and Jason Gamble caught Kenny Asbell. In turn 2, Asbell went around and Stalnaker barely tapped Asbell. The 20 minutes had expired and it would set up a 2 lap dash with Stalnaker leading Woodall, Gamble, and Scott Mooers. They would stay that way through the checkers with Stalnaker winning, Woodall 2nd, Gamble 3rd, Mooers a hard earned 4th, and Chris Shea drove all the way up to 5th. Further review in the tech shed, however, led to the disqualification of Stalnaker, giving Vaughn Woodall his first career win. Jason Gamble got another 2nd place finish, Scott Mooers moved up to 3rd, Chris Shea with 4th, and Chris Rowe would round out the top 5.

The Gladiators went out next, and they put on a thrilling show. On lap 2, Art Souther had a hard hit with the turn 4 wall while Larry Nelson drove the 10 car through the thick infield grass. After the clean-up, Steve Johnson, Devin Walker, Sammy Dell, and Matt Shea had a thrilling battle for the final 13 laps. Johnson held the lead throughout with Walker behind him. Dell and Shea, however, had the battle, switching 3rd and 4th for a while. As the white flag was displayed, Walker had a drag race with Johnson down the front stretch. Devin Walker earned his first win of 2010, Steve Johnson 2nd, Matt Shea 3rd, Sammy Dell 4th, and Jerry Taylor 5th.

With a 12 car field, the Late Models had an exciting night ahead. On lap 1, David Kinsey had a little spin and V.P. Pipken had nowhere to go except into Kinsey. Both drivers were able to continue. After the restart, it was all green for the final 24 laps, and up front it was all #46. No, Darrell Padgett wasn't in the car; Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. was driving the 46! Ivedent went out to win and win he did. He lapped everyone but 2nd place finisher Mark Whitener. Ivedent Lloyd won in dominating fashion, Mark Whitener was 2nd, Christian Augspuirger an impressive 3rd, J.O. Nobles in 4th, and Jack Nosbisch a hard-earned 5th.

The only Mini Stocks on dirt had a thrilling night of racing ahead with a rubbered-in track. With just 1 race after this night, Dan Kerr needed to make up 12 points in 2 races. Dan did what he needed with an impressive win in his heat and his feature, gaining 4 of the needed 12 points. On lap 1, Jody Robbins spun in turn 4 and slid down the track right into Dean Kinsey. Both drivers were able to finish the race. Another 5 laps passed and Robbins spun in the same spot. That set up a 9 lap finish and as Dan Kerr held the lead, Nick Kerr, Paul Combast, and Keith Briggs battled. They switched back and forth until the checkers. Dan Kerr won, closely followed by Nick Kerr, Keith Briggs, Paul Combast, and Johnny Zackery. In tech, however, Briggs was disqualified, handing 3rd to Combast, Zackery moved up to 4th, and Sean Babcock would take 5th.

Ocala Speedway has some of the most exciting racing coming up this week with the Colortyme Open-Wheel Modifieds running their final event of 2010, the Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks run for $1000 and no points, the Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks, and the Gladiators have a 'No Previous Winners of 2010 night.' Gates open at 5PM with racing at 8. For more information you may call the Speedway or check out www.ocalaspeedway.com.

DARLAND STRETCHES NATIONAL WIN STREAK TO 23 YEARS WITH SUNDAY OCALA WIN

by BRP Media
Ocala, Florida…….Dave Darland added to the most impressive streak in USAC history on Sunday night at Bubba Raceway Park, as he added another AMSOIL National Sprint Car win to his list and made it 23 consecutive seasons with at least one win in a USAC National series. The Lincoln, Indiana veteran’s all-time record 54th National Sprint Car win came in flag-to-flag fashion aboard the Phillips Motorsports – Trench Shoring #71P DRC/Foxco. “My crew had to work their asses off just to get the car ready for the feature after some issues in the heat race and then gave me a great car even without having much chance to keep up with the track. We have just had some bad luck out of the gate, but tonight was a great way to rebound. It’s good to be down here while it’s snowing at home, and I can drink a beer to celebrate while it’s warm outside. And it’s good to get my first win in the state of Florida!” Darland said. Darland led at the start over polesitter Chris Windom, while Robert Ballou was the early man on the move, jumping into the top-five in just a few laps after starting tenth. A red flag on lap six brought things to a screeching halt as Brady Short flipped hard into turn three and collected Landon Simon. Neither driver was hurt. After a tangle on the ensuing restart, Ballou found himself bringing out the next caution as he slid to a stop in turn-three, giving up the fifth spot but restarting at the tail. Under that caution, defending champion and current point leader Brady Bacon… read more
