A Night Of Heat

. Posted in Racing News

The Late Models went out first for a qualifying session for 42 cars as one was confined to the pit area for repairs. The 12 of Hunter Peacock was on provisional pole through 7 qualifiers until young Christian Augspurger broke the 16 second bracket and took pole. Augspurger held on for quite some time, but Tyler Ivey put the 47 on point for the time being. David Clegg put the car that won the Powell Memorial in 2009 on pole for about 1 minute, if that, because Dillon Wood took the provisional pole making it 3 different pole sitters in 3 runs. Things cooled down until Mark Whitener put the 58 on track and set a 16:468 to take pole. Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. was the 35th qualifier and set a time just over a tenth slower then Whitener's, but it was enough for 2nd fastest. "The Magic Man" picked up the Koury Fast Qualifier Award With CS-Advertising.Com with Lloyd 2nd, Wood 3rd, Shan Smith in 4th, "IceMan" Austin Kirkpatrick in 5th, Brabdon DeWitt in 6th, J. Johnson took 7th, David Clegg was the highest car to win a Powell Memorial before in 8th, 9th went to Tyler Ivey, and Brandon Cameron set the 10th fastest time.

The Mini Stocks ran a clean heat and Ray Folwell continued to dominate. Sean Babcock put his 9B into 2nd while Stephen Hahlbraugh had to settle for 3rd. Ryan Babcock, the 16 year old, was 4th barely edging Brittany Yates for 5th. In the Mini Stock Dash For Cash Ray Folwell pulled away from Hahlbraugh and the Babcocks, in age order, to take the crisp Ben Franklin home for the night.

Late Model heats put the top 4 through which left open 4 spots for B Mains. Christian Augspurger dominated heat 1, but Jeff Mathews made the most passes and took 2nd. Hunter Peacock took 3rd and a Powell Memorial starting spot, and Kellum put his 41 in the final transfer spot in heat 1. The 2nd heat was a Simons domination while Giles, R. Van Sickle, and Bo Allen clinched their starting spots in tomorrow's field. Heat 3 was packed and a big name would miss out on clinching. Mark Whitener put 58 on top while Dillon Wood took 2nd. David Clegg hooked it up and stole 3rd from Shan Smith's 99W leaving, yes, Tyler Ivey on the outside looking in. Ivey, however, has the points provisional if allowed and/or needed. Double 2 won heat 4, Brandon Cameron, while Johnson, Nasworthy, and Crouse took spots alongside the best in Florida and Georgia. Heat 5 watched Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. run away from Matt Hartley, Bobby Richardson, and 2008 Powell Memorial champion Johnny Collins, who all locked into the field of 20 which will become 24 by showdown time. In the Dash For Cash, Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. took $250 dollars, about $30 a lap, while Dillon Wood's 2nd place gave him $150, and Shan Smith got a Ben Franklin for his efforts in 3rd.

The Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks put on 2 heats with Chris Shea beating points leader Jason Gamble. The 2nd heat had Eddie Lake pass Vaughn Woodall on the final lap, however, Woodall had a transmission problem that will need to be fixed quickly. Eddie Lake also won a nice Franklin by fending off the hard-charging Chris Shea in the Dash For Cash.

Don't miss the 16th Annual Powell Memorial at Bubba Raceway Park. Gates open at 4:30 with racing scheduled for 7:00. For more information you may check out www.bubbaracewaypark.com or call the Speedway hotline!

by BRP Media
Max Blair of Centerville, PA celebrates his NeSmith Late Model win on Thursday night in the Rock Auto.com Winternationals at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, FL driving the R&J Poultry Rocket. With a win and third-place showing in the first two nights of racing, Blair leads the NeSmith Late Model point standings. (PhotosByTrace.com)OCALA, FL – Max Blair of Centerville, PA had to outrun the competition and a leaking right-rear tire to win the 50-lap main event on Thursday night for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series in the Rock Auto.com Winternationals at Bubba Raceway Park. Blair drove the R&J Poultry Rocket to the $2,500 win and the NeSmith Late Model point lead. “During a caution period on lap 20, my dad gave me a signal that my right-rear tire was going down,” Blair said. “I worked the car back and forth, and it felt fine, so I just kept going. I was really sweating it out in the last laps of the race because I could really feel it going away, but it stayed up until right after I took the checkered flag.” Blair started out the evening by taking fast time honors with a lap around Bubba Raceway Park in 15.947 seconds to earn the pole position for the main event. Blair took the lead at the start of the race, but he had plenty of company throughout the race. The first nine laps were led by Blair, and then he decided to go to the outside to negotiate around the cars on the tail of the lead lap. That opened up the inside groove for Walker Arthur of Forest, VA, who got… read more
