Fast Cars And Super Stars At The Front Of The Powell Memorial

. Posted in Racing News

Some drivers dream of February. Some dream of May. In Florida, we dream of June. As it is the first week of June that means it's time for the Powell Memorial, a tribute to the family of James Powell that was so tragically lost on June 7th, 1995. Alongside the Late Models were the Mini Stocks presented by DNA Energy Drinks and the Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks presented by Miller Lite.

The Mini Stocks were up first for the night, and, even though they aren't the Big Bodies, every driver wants to say that they won on the night of the Powell Memorial. On lap 1 the 47 of Tim Zackery looped it around, and the 1AR of Travis Staats, Shirlene Hammond in the 22, and the 11 of Megan Meyer were all innocent victims of a spin. Coming out of turn 4 on lap 4, Megan Meyer and Nick Kerr made contact and both would pull off course for the remainder of the night. On lap 15 the yellow came out as Dean Kinsey smacked the wall and came down into the right rear of Ray Ethridge's 21 machine. Both, however, were able to continue. On the restart Charlie Staats was slow and moved up the clay, but Roberto Morfin, Jr. was coming and unfortunate contact was made sending Staats' 09 into a slide on the front cover of Morfin, Jr. Morfin, Jr. made a pit stop and went back to the clay, but Staats would go no further on the night. The restrt with 10 to go gave Chris Zimmermann 1 final shot at Ray Folwell, but to no avail. Ray Folwell put the 21X in victory lane for the 3rd time in 4 races, while Chris Zimmermann watched from the cockpit of his runner-up #29. Shirlene Hammond came from the lap 1 incident to finish 3rd, right in front of last week's winner, Brittany Yates. Ray Ethridge took home a solid 5th.

B-Mains, 2 in fact, would move 4 drivers in, plus a points provisional which would be used in the 2nd B-Main for sure. In B-Main 1, it was Brandon DeWitt and Kyle Van Sickle pulling away from the others. The 2nd B-Main was won by "Catfish" Keith Nosbisch, and the final transfer spot went to "The Tallahassee Terror" Tyler Ivey. With Ivey, the points leader qualifying, that left 2nd in points Darrell Padgett with the points provisional and 25th starting spotThe Powell Memorial started with the top 10 re-drawing, and, ironically, the pole was not drawn which handed it to Jay Johnson. Johnson, however, was not able to fire his engine until Hulk Hogan, honorary Grand Marshal for the 16th Annual Powell Memorial, allowed 'The Brothers' on the frontstretch to fire those 25 engines. The Powell Memorial was shortened to 67 laps for 2011 in honor of the date of the accident, 6/7. jay Johnson kept his 1J on point for the 2nd longest, but gave way to Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. on lap 17. Lloyd, Jr. held on for 17 laps until David Clegg, owner of the car Lloyd drove to victory 2 years ago, took his 07 for a spin in turn 3. A 6 lap run followed the Clegg yellow flag, as Jay Johnson's spin in turn 4 caused Tyler Ivey, Christian Augspurger, Mike Nasworthy, and Roger Crouse to all pile up, but 4 of the 5 were able to continue. Unfortunately the hard-charging Tyler Ivey, who had gained 14 spots after 40 laps, would not be able to keep up his good points runs at Bubba Raceway Park. Another 5 lap green run was ended when Roger Crouse's 15 stopped in turn 3. The restart consisted of a lead change as Dillon Wood led for 2 laps, but Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. would not be denied again. Lloyd, Jr. drove back around Wood on lap 48, and 6 laps later Shan Smith made a great save to not cripple anybody's race car. The lap 54 restart was called off as the green dropped, so they fell into line for the restart of the restart. The final 13 laps jumbled some of the top 5 up, but Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. was first under the checkers, right in front of the only other Powell winner in the field, Johnny Collins. Jeff Mathews, the 2nd place finisher in a Modified event in Barberville, finished 3rd in the Powell Memorial. Dillon Wood faded a bit at the end, but still led more laps in the Powell memorial then all but Jay Johnson and Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. "Catfish" Keith Nosbisch brought his 02 from 22nd all the way to 5th, and maybe even the Bubba Raceway Park points lead.

Even the Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks presented by Miller Lite drivers wanted to win on the night of the Powell Memorial. Lap 1 gave the field a scare as 3-in-a-row winner Jason Gamble hit the wall in turn 1, a victim of a stuck throttle. No one was seriously injured in the crash. After a 6-lap run, it was another yellow flag for the lost tire of Luke Sadler. On the restart James Sullivan took the 14S for a loop and without his brakes was unable to stop from coasting into Brandon Tillander's 73. The accident took both cars out of the event. Gordon Cade and Eddie Lentz were having great runs, but both were victimized by flat tires on lap 9 and they did bring the yellow flag upon the field. On lap 11 Ronnie Harrell lost a tire on the 6 and the yellow came out as Harrell said good-bye for the night. the restart allowed the field to work its way around and Chris Shea took the lead while holding his brother Brian and Eddie Lake off into the closing laps. A yellow flag on lap 21, brought out by Marlon Durbin, set up a dash. After a lap Luke Sadler pulled to the infield witha major fire in his 15. Sadler was okay after the crash and did park it himself. Another 2 lap run didn't stop Chris Shea, but the yellow flag for Durbin's spin and Tim Mathieu's dead car, caused by an air filter, did. Shea finally got the white flag he wanted to see and brought the 76 around in first with Eddie Lake in tow. After that the field was frozen as Jeff Barrett and Brian Shea made unfortunate contact coming to the start-finish line. With a frozen field that put Vaughn Woodall on the podium with Chris Watson, who had a seat filled with mud at the beginning of the night, and Jonathan Gillette in 4th and 5th, respectively.

Next week at Bubba Raceway Park is Night of a Thousands for the UMP Open-Wheel Modifieds, Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks, Mini Stocks, and Gladiators. Also, the Florida Mini Sprint Association hits town. Gates open at 4:30 with racing at 7 on Saturday. For more information you can check out www.bubbaracewaypark.com or call the Speedway hotline.

Results 6-28-14

by BRP Media
The first half of the 2014 racing season came to a close this past Saturday Night. The night ended in a bang with a lot of great racing action, to be followed by a beautiful Pre-4th of July Fireworks Show. The Hobby Stocks were first out for their 20 lap feature event. Rick Elwood (92) would find himself leading the first half of this race in comfort, until Eric Moon (18) made his way through the field into the second position. Once Moon maneuvered his way through the field and caught Elwood these two would battle it out for the top position for last 5 laps. At the checkered Elwood would win followed by Moon, third would go to Cory Howard (22), forth to Brandon Elwood (28E) and rounding out the fifth position would be Joe Forsyth (17F). Next up would be the Scorpion Performance Engine Modifieds to take to the track. The original line up would have Austin Sanders (64) and Paul Snyder (54) starting on the front row, followed by Buzzie Reutimann (00) and Roger Crouse (9) starting in the second row. Race control would then offer up a challenge to all 4 drivers. The challenge would be to go to the back of the 10 car field, If one of these 4 drivers would win the feature they would receive a $300 dollar bonus. Sanders, Snyder and Reutimann would accept the challenge leaving Crouse and Shane Nichols (65) for a front row start. Crouse would take advantage of the front row start and jump out to an early lead putting distance on Sanders and Snyder, but unfortunate luck for Reutimann… read more
