May 14, 2016 would be an awesome night of racing at Florida’s fastest 3/8 mile dirt track. The weather was perfect and all in attendance would see some great racing action from some of Florida’s best dirt track drivers.
First up on the grid for the night would be the Dirt’s for Racin Hobby Stock Touring Series. After a couple of sets of heat races by the drivers, their feature line up would be set with Ocala’s own Michael Stalnaker (8) and Mark Maresca (77) pacing the field to green for their 25 lap feature event. Stalnaker would jump to an early lead over Maresca while Michael Whipple (35) and Kevin Mills (01) would battle it out for the 3rd place position. The caution would fly on lap eight for series regular Timmy Gay (90) and give Maresca another shot at Stalnaker. On the restart Stalnaker would pick up where he left off and drive away from the field. Not even a late in the race mechanical issues could stop Stalnaker from a victory as he crossed the checkered flags running on 7 cylinders followed by Maresca, Jacob Antis (101), Whipple and Thomas Burnside (13B).
Next up where the Southern States Lucas Oil Midgets, making their first ever trip to Bubba Raceway Park. At the drop of the green flag Otto Scrape (3) and Lance Luke (99) would battle it out for the lead, until the caution on lap 6 as Luke would have a solo spin on front stretch. On the restart the 70 year old driver Scrape would go on to the win, followed by Mike Blankenship (5), Luke and Terry Becker (30).
Roaring out on to the track next were the Bubba Raceway Park Late Models for their feature event paying $2000 dollars to the winner. Doug Horton (11H) and Bryan Barnhardt (69B) set the front row for the start of 35 lap feature event. At the start of the race Horton would jump to a commanding lead over Kyle Bronson (40B), as the laps ticked off you would see some great side by side action as Ivedent Lloyd Jr. (07), Mark Whitener (5) and Rich Pratt (0) would make their way through the field. Just after Horton saw the cross over flags signaling half way home a series of cautions or casualties would fly as tires became a factor in the main event. “The Killer” Kyle Bronson would get the job done with conserving his tires and bring home the checkered flag, followed by Pratt, Tyler Clem (14), Lloyd and Larry Anderson (51) would round out the top 5.
The Florida T.Q. Late Models were next to take to the track for their 4th event of the 2016 racing season, this event saw the return of several favorites of the group including Sean Babcock (95), Don Strosahl Jr. (15), Kevin McKenzie (7) and Sal Guliuzza (68), but the show stopper of the night was the “Lil Magicman” Bubba Whitener making his first appearance in the Hopke prepared H2 car. Terry Wright (007) and John Hopke (91) would lead the field to start of the race; Wright would jump to the lead as Strosahl made his way to the front. Strosahl would pressure Wright for lead and but would have to settle into second. At the checkered it would be Wright followed by Strosahl, Babcock, J. Hopke and Lil” Whitener.
Last to take to the track was the ever exciting V-8 Thunder Stocks as Gerald Haley (99) and Jimbo Warden (5) would set the front row of their 20 lap feature event. Warden would get out front with an early lead as Buddy Pope (81) would overtake Hayley for second on lap 1. By lap 5 Pope had worked his way around Warden for the top spot and would maintain that position to the checkered flag, followed by Tyler Bryden (31t), John Thorpe (114), Warden and Hayley.
